Differently Abled Students and Chronic Absenteeism

Target Audience:
Central Office, Building Leaders, Teacher Leaders.

Abstract:

Supporting Differently Abled Students (1-2pm) :

When differently abled students are not included in an MTSS framework, the foundational concept of all students being general education students first, with specialized services supplementary, is eroded. This important work can only happen when we understand the diverse needs of this vulnerable population. This session will offer support for school leaders and differently abled student teams to identify the root causes of these needs and the underperformance at the school level and student level

Supporting Student Attendance (2:15-3:15pm):

The root causes of chronic absenteeism are pervasive and not simple to solve but can be addressed when we work together to develop a plan and implement solutions that address them. This session will provide valuable information and resources so that school leaders and attendance team members can expand their multi-tiered system of support to include whole-school and individualized prevention, early intervention, and intensive support for chronic absenteeism. The session will begin with a review of the four research-based categories of absence reasons and examples of how they display themselves in our schools today. Participants will also learn about the RIDE attendance tools that have been made available to better meet this challenge head-on, in the holistic and data-driven framework that is required to decrease student absences and build a plan for attendance success.
