This one-day workshop will explore the CCSS’s focus on General Academic Vocabulary as a way to provide greater access to complex texts and participants will learn how to plan explicit vocabulary instruction for tier two words by using a set of standard criteria. Academic vocabulary is assessed on the NCSC alternate assessment ELA test at every grade. This workshop will be differentiated for those who teach students taking the RIAA. There are two goals for this workshop:
1. Discriminate between tier one, two, and three words.
2. Understand how teaching tier two words (General Academic Vocabulary) will allow students greater access to variety of more complex texts.
