Building Coherence in Fraction Instruction in Grds     

Target Audience:
Teachers in grades 3-5, Math Coaches

Abstract:

The Common Core State Standards requires teachers and students to develop a deep understanding of fractions at conceptual level. Using tools and resources to explore the progression of understanding for the standards in Number and Operations – Fractions, teachers in grades 3 – 5 will leave the session with the professional understanding necessary to deliver content-rich, conceptually-based instruction in this domain. Particular attention will be given to the number line as a tool that is instrumental in transitioning from whole numbers to fractions.  It is recommended that all participants bring a copy of the Common Core State Standards to this session.
