3/10/2006  RIDE - the latest on dropout verification  Dr. Ken Gu - SEA
First, our thanks to districts and schools who have timely responded to our request for verification on the students' exit status. Our initial results reveal that districts in general have significantly under-reported students who actually dropped out. We will let you know the finalresults until we collected the data from the rest of the districts. Schools and districts have responded positively to this request because it helps them understand the significance of this matter, the fact that they are held accountable for every student who are enrolled in their schools and districts and how they exited. If the districts and schools are not diligently tracking the exit status of the students leaving your buildings over time, it will be a huge burden for them to report the exit status of each student who were one-time enrolled in their schools and districts in the prior 4 or 5 years when the State computes the graduation and dropout rates for each cohort of 9th grade students. To-date, we have completed emailing the listing of students for all of the schools and districts whose exit statuses need to be updated, along with a set of instructions and exit codes to use. In the same file, we also included a listing of all students who have been reported and confirmed as dropouts. None of the districts and schools have actually been ‘audited’ at this time, but when audited, documentation (e.g., requests for transcripts, letters from parents, phone logs, and how your SIS tracks the withdrawals, etc.) on students who exited the public school system, particularly for reasons other than dropouts, will be requested. We would like to thank you again for your participation and efforts in this process. We courage you to call or email us for any questions related to this matter. If you need an extension beyond April 3rd deadline, let us know as well. Contacts: Elizabeth Landry, 222-8968, elizabeth.landry@ride.ri.gov Kenneth Gu, 222-8957, kenneth.gu@ride.ri.gov
