The Academic Language of Science

Target Audience:
Science Teachers with ELLs, ELL Teachers, ELL Coordinators, Administrators

Abstract:
This two-day workshop offers teachers of English Language Learners time to delve into combining English Language Development Standards and the Next Generation of Science Standards to engage all learners. Together we will work on how to foster a language rich environment within the science classroom that expands opportunities for language learners. Through hands-on experimentation and analysis of language embedded within the content and practices, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to engage language learners. The workshop will conclude with participants applying the process to one of their lessons.

The workshop will be most beneficial to you if you come equipped with the following resources:
*Sample Lessons/Labs: Bring a sample lesson or science lab that you’ve already taught and are looking to revise, or a lesson you are planning to teach in the future. You’ll be sharing your lesson or lab plan with 5-7 other educators.
*Student Data: Bring your ACCESS Teacher Report or the Student Roster Report for students you work with. If you can’t bring either, bring or be aware of your ELL students’ ELD levels.
*A laptop to record your work.
